Chicago DJ Stalwarts Viva Acid Shape the Electronic Scene at Avondale Music Hall
By Lori Sapio
Viva Acid hosted a weekend of talks, workshops and events in Chicago. Each year, they join forces with Gramaphone Records—a true cornerstone of their community and a driving force in shaping the culture for decades. This year, they also partnered with the Chicago Electronic Music Conference (CEMC). The purpose of the weekend was to discover new sounds, and experience incredible sets from the talent they’ve gathered.
In the late 90s, Luis Baro and his team put together the same lineup: DJ Heather, DJ Slugo, Photek and Josh Wink. All of the nostalgia came flooding back to walk in and see so many old school ravers that attended the show way back then. DJ Heather opened the night with her soulful house set and primed the crowd for DJ Slugo, “The Ghetto-father of the American Dance floor.” Booties were shaking and juking throughout his whole set. The legendary drum and bass DJ and producer Photek alongside MC Questionmark brought the sounds from London Town. I can honestly say, that this is the first time I have ever seen Photek smile during a set. He danced, smiled and shared his talent while Questionmark made his way into the crowd and accompanied each track skillfully. Techno artist Josh Wink ended the night with all of the heads dancing with the biggest smiles on their faces.
Viva Acid does this out of love and care, with the belief that our community can grow stronger, more connected, and more resilient. Your support directly helps them keep workshops and conversations free and accessible for everyone.
Today’s effort, tomorrow’s legacy.
