Lorna Shore Unleash Deathcore Devastation in Indiana
By Christopher David
Deathcore champions Lorna Shore unleashed one of the more relentless metal shows in recent memory at the Hard Rock Casino in Gary this week, solidifying their position as one of the top metal acts currently stalking the globe.
Opening with “Oblivion” from 2025’s I Feel the Everblack Festering Within Me, the New Jersey quartet’s assault on the senses was all-encompassing, with unique, arcane visuals accompanying every song, changing the mood and tone from track to track as the crowd gradually worked itself into an appropriate frenzy during “Prison of Flesh” and the more melodic grandeur of “Glenwood.” Musically, vocalist Will Ramos is still the focal point of the band’s sound, from the maniacal highs to his classic, death metal lows—but the band’s new material shows growth beyond their deathcore roots in sometimes surprising ways, largely due to guitarist Adam De Micco’s melody-driven, atmospheric solos that, at times, called to mind the classic Smith-Murray solos of Iron Maiden. New tracks like “Unbreakable” are among the most accessible the band has released to date, with singable refrains still rooted in the band’s signature blend of deathcore, prog, and death metal.
Ramos’ calls to open the pit were answered en masse as he introduced “Sun//Eater” from 2022’s Pain Remains.
“Let’s shout out these security guards up here for doing an amazing job,” Ramos noted, “because this is the point in the show where we want every single crowd-surfer up here!” Waves of crowd-surfers ensued, continuing into “Cursed to Die” and the chanting chorus of “In Darkness.” By the time their most well-known track landed in the encore, the raging, anthemic “To the Hellfire,” only the most jaded attendee could have seen the show as anything less than a band at the top of their game—and still rising.
Opener Paleface Swiss delivered a crushing set of progressive, percussive deathcore, led by vocalist Marc Zellweger, whose high energy brought things to a fever pitch early in the night.
